This month, C Magazine‘s design section featured a full-page photo by Gia Canali photography of the tables from our wedding last October. We were thrilled to see it in the magazine and thrilled that they mentioned our friends at Clementine Floral Works, who did the flowers.

The wedding was at Carondelet House, an up-and-coming wedding location in Los Angeles that we think is going to join Smog Shoppe and Marvimon as the Big Three wedding locations in central LA (if it hasn’t already). Carondelet has a beautiful old-fashioned but not stodgy vibe — we strongly recommend it!

So it’s not a photo of our invitations (which we promise we will post up here soon) but it is a photo from a wonderful night and such a perfect example of all the help we got from our friends.

Back when designing the wedding papers for Julia and Eli,  I met them at the Bride’s mothers home where they showed me the Pepper Tree where they would be married. It was decided that I should illustrate it for their wedding invitations…. So that’s just what I did.

The pepper tree printed blind on museum board, with green type and then mounted to cedar veneer… I love using cedar for weddings – it keeps the critters away from a marriage, I like to think. and it smells so nice too! not to mention the warm coloration.

And just for fun, the save the date as well.

This is the note that I am sending along with some chocolate chip cookies (and a bottle of wine) to Kurt. It is a very sincere note, but I couldn’t help but make a little joke with this thank you card. I mean, how often does someone save your fiancé’s life at work! He works in social media… it’s not really a high risk environment.

Hilarious right? and thank goodness these tiny spiraea florets came in today to further my “beyond hipster tongue in cheek” but still very very serious note.

Here are the cookies… they are really good too… My secret recipe and Ben’s FAVORITE!

When the production of The Cooking Channel series “He Cooks She Cooks” asked me to create a printed menu for a benefit dinner cooked by Suzanne Goin and David Lentz, I jumped at the opportunity.

I LOVE cooking (well, baking mostly but more top of the stove lately) and I LOVE the Hollywood Farmer’s Market. So it was an easy “YES”. They gave me the menu which was based on locally available ingredients, and I typset and printed the menu in a jiffy. Hopefully the letterpress was helpful in raising money for the Farmers Market!

The show aired this past Sunday, but hopefully will repeat so everyone can see it!

I was unsure about what my printed prayer would look like until I went to a vintage stamp shop in New York on my vacation. There I dug through a pile of vintage Japanese postage stamps and found my inspiration. Mine would be a sort of letter, using Japanese stamps for the recipients and United States stamps for the senders (I suppose I was speaking for everyone in the good ole USA… is that weird?)

I found out from some special Japanese fluent helpers that one of the stamps portrayed Fukushima, which isn’t where the tsunami hit, but was badly injured as a result. 

I particularly loved the coloration of the two palm tree stamps. I think they really showed the similarities between that area of Japan (not sure!) and California. This was an instant match.

Then in my not very practiced handwriting, I wrote what I wanted for Japan. I chose green ink for growth, and printed away.

I sent off 17 prints today to Japan with hopes that my message will reach far more than 17 people and that the beauty of communication will be translated.

To get there I used hand calligraphy for print for their names and charcoal grey ink (I liked the idea of it being grey instead of black as if years had taken their toll and faded the print) with just a little bit of victorian floral embellishment… popped in my inked up press and mashed on a textured but cleanly cut stock…. et voila. It did just the trick.

Jessica and Greg are one of my favorite wedding couple clients of the year. Their taste is super elegant and modern… We were really working with a white on white, monochromatic feel for the wedding stationery. I think they were really consistent all the way to the reception…

Their wedding invitations featured a my rendering of Jessica’s wedding dress lace (which was kept quiet from Greg, btw) printed letterpress on handmade paper with white ink.

and these images from Jesssica and Greg’s reception are from wedding planner Mindy Weiss’s blog which also features florals by one of Tiny Pine’s FAVORITES – Gilly’s in Silverlake. I LOVE the way the set up the escort cards… and also a little shot of a table that has Maple wood table numbers…

Molly & Jason’s Wedding Invitation by Tiny Pine Press

Hi all!

I am really excited to post these photos!!

I realize it’s been over a month since the wedding, but I finally have a couple of photos to post of Jason and Molly’s wedding invitation that we designed and produced for their February 27 nuptials.

This picture really shows off the handmade paper with the natural deckle edges. It’s 100% cotton made in the USA lovely and elegant paper, printed letterpress and then mounted to a piece of walnut… then tied with green silk thread!

Here is a pretty good peak at the envelope liner with the custom pattern we designed that was later repeated at the reception on the wedding cake (by our friends, Vanilla Bake Shop)  and muslin escort card card bags that we printed…

and here is a photo of the walnut backing attached to a tree in the backyard outside my studio. This just makes me smile. I hope it is as inspiring to you!

is my treasure! especially in this case.

Well, actually, I did pay a little bit for this press. (and then I paid almost as much to have it moved!)

Introducing my new big bad printing giant. He’s a Chandler & Price 10×15 old style from around 1912. He is OLD and sweet and so far his personality is easy-going. He still hasn’t told me his name. I do know that he is a loving gentle giant. His heart is open and exposed because look what I found. He has an ink fountain attached and the pins are shaped like little hearts. A whole row. I saw those and fell in LOVE!

I parked him in my garage with his girlfriend, the big cutter. I think she told mentioned that her name is Betsy. They are about the same age and they came from the same shop. I just couldn’t bear to separate them. Betsy doesn’t look her age, but she is set in her ways. Photos of her are coming shortly.

I have been spending extensive quality time with my new friends, just getting to know them…. Cleaning up the quiet Mr. printing press and trying to listen for his name – exploring all of the possible ole holes for his old joints. and getting ready to have the chiropractor come over soon to give him an adjustment so he will be ready to print print print.

OK. I will admit that the prop master, Gay Parello (who by the way is totally cool and very on top of the look, as you would have to be to work on a demanding period show like Mad Men) came to Tiny Pine Press because she needed to have a type of printing that was authentic to the period (letterpress) in a type that was of the period (Nuptial Script). AND they needed it FAST. I think I turned this project around in 3 days.  I was more than pleased to help out one of my very favorite television shows!

In the episode they talk about bells, and silver, and maybe blue – I can’t remember – but at the end of the day they didn’t show anything but the type. You will have to take my word for it that the invitations actually did have bells and silver and there were three different versions of them.

But I will take the airtime, with or without those silly bells!
